Rose Colour Changes

Rose Colour Changes🌹 Why the same rose changes colour

Factor

Hot summer

Cooler winter

🌡️ Temperature

High temperature can make colour lighter/faded

Cooler temperature often gives deeper/richer colour

☀️ Sunlight

Very strong sunlight can bleach petals

Moderate sunlight usually preserves colour better

🌙 Night temperature

Warm nights reduce colour intensity in some varieties

Cool nights can increase pigment development

💧 Water stress

Heat + insufficient water → smaller/paler flowers

Less heat stress → better flower development

🌱 Nutrition

Excess nitrogen can produce lots of foliage but weaker flowering/colour

Balanced nutrition supports better blooms

🌹 Flower age

Newly opened flowers may be darker/lighter depending on variety

Cooler conditions can slow opening and colour change

The biggest factor: temperature

Rose colour is largely controlled by pigments such as anthocyanins and carotenoids. Temperature influences how much pigment develops and how stable it remains in the petals.

For many roses:

Summer: 🌡 30–40°C → petals may become lighter, washed out, smaller or slightly different in shade

Cool season: 🌡 roughly 15–25°C → petals often become deeper, richer and more clearly defined

This is particularly noticeable with red, pink, purple, mauve, bicolour, strip, and orange roses.

🌹 An important point for rose lovers

If you are growing roses, don't assume the summer colour is the permanent/true colour of the variety.

For example, a rose advertised as deep red may produce:

  • 🔴 Deep red in winter

  • 🌹 Medium red in spring

  • 🌸 Pinkish/red in very hot weather

That does not necessarily mean the plant is mislabeled.

The best time to judge the characteristic colour of a rose variety in Indian conditions is generally during the cooler flowering season, when temperatures are moderate, and the plant is not under heat stress.

🇮🇳 For most of India

A rough practiclighter.

October → March: ⭐ Best period to judge the variety's colour.

April → May: Colour may start becoming lighter

June → September: Heat, humidity and monsoon conditions can significantly affect flower size, form and colour

However, this varies considerably between North India, West Bengal/East India, South India and hill regions.
